We just love our suppliers. We really do. And behind every one of our sublime products is a story of inspiration, passion and hard-work to get it from conception to our shelves. So we wanted to share these stories with you in a little series called, 'The Mora Spotlight', where we'll showcase one of our fabulous suppliers and you'll get a behind-the-scenes look of some of our wonderful pieces.
Our first feature of the series is Johanna Öst Häggblom of Joho! Studio. She's created our beautiful Every Year Posters, which are A3 poster calendars that can be used year on year. So clever!
Johanna can you tell us a little about your background in design and how you came to own your own studio?
I have always loved to create things. Growing up in a small village on the west coast of Finland I have learned to appreciate the large fields, the darkness and quietness. There I find my inspiration. A blank paper ready to be filled. My design is simple and symbolic, strongly rooted in the Finnish soil and mentality.
In 2004 I started to study design in Turku, a town on the west-coast of Finland. I graduated in spring 2008 with a Bachelor’s degree in design. After four years of studies and several independent design projects I found myself ready to start up my own company, JOHO! Studio, where I work mainly as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. In autumn 2009 I continued study for a Master’s degree in product and graphic design at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. I graduated as a Master of Arts in May this year.
After graduating I moved back to my home town together with my husband and at the moment I’m working full-time doing freelance work. But maternity leave is awaiting me since I’m expecting a baby in October.
How did you come up with the design for the Every Year Calendar?
I love little notes, simple everyday wisdom, and I got the idea to put little notes in a calendar telling you to remember that the smallest of things can be the biggest. I realised that this kind of calendar could be a poster, something you have on your wall and that you will see everyday.
What is one thing in your daily rituals that you must do every day?
I need a slow start in the morning, just reading the newspaper and drinking some coffee or tea. That always makes a good start to the day!
Your calendar tells us to ‘send a postcard' in February, or 'eat an ice-cream' in June. What are your little pleasures that you can't love without?
I’m constantly learning to appreciate the little pleasures in life and it is not all that easy. The Every Day calendar hangs on my own wall to remind me of eating two scoops ice-cream and to jump rope now and then, it is good to have that reminder in today’s busy world.
What’s the best thing about working for yourself?
The freedom is the best thing! But of course it gets lonely sometimes, I’m lucky to have good friends and a lot of creative people around me that I can meet and discuss ideas with over a coffee.
Where is your favourite place in Finland?
That would be the small village where I grew up, it is close to the nature and the air is easy to breathe. I also love Helsinki, it is a wonderful city, a perfect mix of nature and city pulse.
Do you have a favourite online design resource or blog? What is it?
At the moment I really like pinterest.com. There I can find a nice mix of graphic design, interior and architecture, product design, typography and more… all things that inspires me in my work!
(Speaking of Pinterest, check out our boards here.)
Can you tell us what’s next for JOHO Studio?
I’m thinking about making a special edition of the Every Year poster in a new colour, I also planning to have the poster translated into other languages. But first maternity leave, maybe having a baby also will give me inspiration to make products for kids, who knows.
Thank you Johanna - we'll be the first to stock your kids range if you are inspired to create something for the little ones!
