When we were sourcing our products we were mainly focusing on home accessories. But when we came across Hania Jędrzejczyk’s gorgeous Moose Design bags, we just couldn’t resist. Crafted from strong felt and natural leather, these hand made bags truly reflect their designer’s background in architecture. In this Mora Spotlight, we learn a bit more about Hania’s world and her favourite Polish food!
1. Hania how did you begin Moose Design Bags?
As a child I loved to sew, embroider and draw pottery. Creating things was always a lot of fun and that's why I decided to be an architect. I graduated architectural studies and started to work in an architectural firm. Unfortunately in this profession creativity was only a small part of the whole process...too small for me. After few years of working in architecture I decided to change something in my life. I quit work and I started designing handbags.
2. What steps are involved from design to production?
For me proportion is the most important element in design. When I'm working on a new idea for a bag, I'm looking for the ideal form for it. Then comes a time to think about making the handbag practical. I check fasteners, strength of materials and ways of wearing it. When everything is perfect the bag is ready for sale.
3. What’s involved in a typical day for you?
I wake up, leave my bedroom, turn left into next room and I'm already at work! My home is also my workshop so it cuts both ways. I can work in sweats all day but as I don't have to rush to work I have big problems waking up. I'm a seamstress, designer and manager in one person - so my day is a bit crazy and chaotic. I answer e-mails, order materials and of course sew and design handbags all in one day.
4. You use felt in these bags, what made you decide to make these bags with felt?
Felt is a very rigid material, so thanks to this I can create concrete, sculptural forms from it. As an architect I love simple design. Felt gives me a chance to construct minimalistic handbags in my favourite grey colour.
5. You live in Poland, what’s the best part about living there?
Definitely the beautiful nature. We have amazing lakes, mountains, forests and cold but wonderful seas. When I was a child I toured the entire country with my parents and each year we were visiting another region. Everywhere in Poland you can find somewhere really special.
6. Where is your favourite place in Poland?
Now my favorite place is Wrocław. I moved here as a student and was charmed by the people and atmosphere of the city. Some say that this is the city of bridges - we have about hundred of them. Water is everywhere and that’s what makes this place so special.
7. Where is your favourite place in Europe?
I think it's Italy. I love the sun and good food, what else could I ask for?
8. What is Polish cuisine like – can you describe some typical Polish dishes?
Traditional Polish cuisine is a bit too fattening for me, but there is one dish I love - “pierogi z kapustą i grzybami” (dumplings with cabbage and mushrooms). We mainly eat it on Christmas but sometimes on other parts of the year too. It’s yummy.
9. What’s next for you and Moose Design?
The “Next Life Project”. This is my new eco friendly project. I make handmade pouches and bags made of 100% repurposed natural leather. Repurposing is essentially a form of recycling. Instead of throwing leather jackets away I find a new use for them - I give them a new life!
Thank you Hania! We’ll definitely look out for the ‘Next Life Project’ range. In the meantime, check out our range of Moose Design Bags here.
