We all have falls in our life, and we all get back up again. Kintsugi is almost a philosophy, as opposed to just a form of repair. What, though, are some of the best kintsugi quotes? What sums this process up the best?
How can you ensure that you are able to remind yourself of the power of kintsugi when you need that support and peace in your life?
As you can see, then, kintsugi is far more than just a way to repair something. It is a way to embrace change, to show the world that progress comes from change, and to always remember that change is something to search out. Progression often changes how we look, and plays a key role in the story that we have developed throughout the history of our lives.
While you might not be a vase, you, like a broken piece of pottery, should never settle for hiding your scars. Your flaws, your history, your life? This should be something that you not only remember, but embrace wholesale. Keep this in mind, as there is nothing better than realising that progress and change are not things to fear, but things to welcome.
]]>But should you? Should you replace that old, damaged bowl with a new one? Or create a kintsugi bowl instead?
Instead of simply getting rid of the bowl and buying a new one, we suggest you instead create a kintsugi bowl for yourself. The reasoning is pretty simple: instead of seeing something with a smash or a break as irreparable, kintsugi reminds us that repairs are part of the journey.
Kintsugi involves using a substance to hold together the smashed item, such as a bowl or a vase. It then leaves a clear mark where the cracks happened, adding a decorative charm to the product in a way that simply was not possible before. Kintsugi, though, also points to a very important fact of life – that our journeys can involve many falls, breaks, and bumps along the way.
With kintsugi, you not only repair the item – even strengthening your kintsugi bowl – but you can also show off its journey so far. When you look to everything to be simply pristine without any signs of life or a journey, you remove the importance of the moments in life that happen.
Kintsugi reminds us that while we might bear scars or signs of wear and tear, it does not mean anything other than we have been on a very important journey. With that in mind, it is easy to see why a kintsugi bowl is a great idea. It allows you to have decoratively unique bowls that offer an insight into the kind of journey that you have been on.
Always looking for something to be perfect is not a good thing. Even something as simple as repairing a bowl into a kintsugi bowl can be a sign that you are able to roll with the punches. Instead of looking to hide the ‘mistake’ of smashing something, a kintsugi bowl shows the world what happens and not only shows off the new look but also shines a light on the fact that, whilst damaged, even a bowl can live a second life with some simple changes.
Aside from the cosmetics, a kintsugi bowl is a wise product to own because it shows an emotional growth and a willingness to use items that, while damaged, can still well and truly hold a special place within your heart.
]]>The gaps and the cracks are then shown in the form of the kintsugi material, helping to show exactly where the damage took place previously. So, how can this lead to you getting a kintsugi tattoo?
Kintsugi is something that represents our desire to showcase your journey in life, and to never hide our scars. Why, then, is a kintsugi tattoo a good idea?
One of the most important things to think about when getting a tattoo is how it relates to you personally. While many get something generic, others use tattoos to show off something a bit more specific about who they are personally. By getting a kintsugi tattoo, you show yourself as someone who appreciates the value of development and rebirth.
If you are someone who tends to find that life is easier when you simply press ahead, then a kintsugi tattoo is a great investment. The tattoo could even be of something that you broke and then repaired using kintsugi. Whatever the purpose or the reason, though, you will find that a kintsugi tattoo is a very wise investment indeed.
They feel great to design, too, giving you a more abstract way to show off your worldview and your ideas. They make a fine choice for various reasons, but the primary reason is the philosophical aspect. Given the meaning behind kintsugi, a kintsugi tattoo is an easy way to show the world that you follow this particular way of thinking.
A kintsugi tattoo is something that quickly shows others that you value the journey. That you understand that, along the way, it is easy to be hurt and harmed. Therefore, you should probably find that kintsugi is an easy way to explain to people that you do not look to hide your story.
Your scars, your smashes, if you will, are part of who you are. Hiding them and pretending they do not exist means simply hiding from a large part of who you are personally. With that in mind, then, why not focus on finding a solution?
A kintsugi tattoo is an easy way to start up a conversation about the importance of balance, self-discovery, and working out who you are and what you wish to do in your life. So, if you want to be someone who is proud of who they are and how they got here, having a kintsugi tattoo is a very wise idea.

You see, the ancient Japanese reparation technique of kintsugi is one that is built upon changing perspective. It leans heavily on the concept that damage alone is not reason enough to discard something. Instead, that damage becomes part of the story; it becomes a meaningful, heartfelt tale for you to tell the wider world. That is why the kintsugi metaphor is so important.
With over four centuries of history, the concept of kintsugi revolves around using a lacquer to fill in the gaps and cracks. If you were to smash a bowl, for example, it would normally be binned and replaced. Kintsugi, though, would involve the reparation of the bowl. Now it becomes stronger, more stylish, and more unique. It has a story to tell that other bowls simply do not.
Instead of surrounding ourselves with faceless perfection, kintsugi instead focuses on surrounding ourselves with something better; a commitment to embracing change.
The original story for kintsugi is hard to pinpoint to a specific person, but most believe it formed during the time of Ashikaga Yoshimasa. The shogun had been given a tea bowl from China, but sent it back to the nation for repairs. Unhappy with the staple-ridden mess that returned, the shogun asked for his own masterminds to find a solution that looked better.
The kintsugi technique was born, embracing the ability to show off the change in the bowl so that it would soon stand out from other bowls. Instead of now being a piece of broken pottery, it became a story; a symbol of embracing transformation and wearing the story and origins of change for all to see.
Indeed, the metaphor here is that we should no longer look to hide the very stories and experiences that make us who we are. We should embrace the events in our life that have led to us being who we are today. This is the very essence of kintsugi; helping us to stop hiding behind who we want to be seen as, and instead focus on who we actually are.
Kintsugi is based around the art of ensuring that the origin becomes as important as the present. For that reason, then, kintsugi has become a phenomenon within the artistry world. The reasoning, though, is always the same: showcasing the reality of a story is far stronger, and far more beautiful, than trying to portray a false narrative.

A kintsugi vase is a vase that has been pieced back together using the Japanese technique of kintsugi. This artistic form of repair uses what is called ‘golden joinery’ by some to stitch the product back together. That old vase could soon be pieced back into place, using the powerful connecting material of kintsugi. This gold (or silver) material then essentially creates design lines that work their way through the product.
A kintsugi vase is unique because the way that a vase smashes is nigh-impossible to then replicate. As such, the lacquer product that is used is then powdered with gold or silver to help add a clear dividing line. This shows the original vase as it was, but also shows the new features added by your own handiwork.
Instantly, you turn that vase from a smashed piece of home décor to something that carries your own artistic weight and charm. For many, this adds history and value to the vase.
When you invest in something as engaging as kintsugi, you will soon realise that repairs are to be embraced, not hidden from. Damage done to a product like a vase should not be hidden away. Instead, it should be shown to the world; this is now part of the history of the vase. The fact that it has survived is even more impressive.
It treats something breaking and/or repairing as part of the history of the item itself. So, this vase goes from being another mass-produced product that became a family heirloom over time to actually having its own unique design. You cannot buy a kintsugi vase in the store that will look the same as your product. The lines, the lacquer, even the colour of the powder…this is all unique to your own vase.
So, instead of always having to settle for a replacement bought from the store, use kintsugi. Piece back together what you can, and fill in the gaps with lacquer. This adds an inventive way to help restore something back to perfect usage, whilst adding a story to tell to anyone who happens to come across this kintsugi vase in your home!
]]>This creates a new story around the damaged item, and shows that even the biggest of breaks can be restored. And this kind of thinking – of never hiding from our journey, of always being ready to see change as progress as opposed to a problem – is absolutely essential to your development. It is a key part of kintsugi wellness, too.
So, what are the main benefits of kintsugi wellness?
When something goes wrong in life, it is very easy to find yourself feeling quite despondent about what has happened. That, though, does not have to happen when you are using kintsugi wellness. Instead, you start to realise that things will change, and that you should instead look to embrace the change. You can then work to make the changes apparent, using them as a form of improvement as opposed to something to fear or worry about.
Another key part of kintsugi wellness is that it allows us to realise that we do not have to simply give up when things get tough.
If you are someone who would quickly throw something in the bin after a dent or a scratch, then you can benefit from kintsugi wellness massively. It will stop you from always seeing damage as permanent and something to hide from or be afraid of. Instead, taking part in kintsugi wellness allows you to quickly understand that even the biggest smash can be repaired, even improved upon, with enough work.
Many times, a piece of kintsugi artwork can sell for more than the original product. Why? Because the kintsugi design is unique. The way that something smashes is nigh-impossible to replicate, thus meaning that the kintsugi pattern will change. This then creates something new, something better, than what was previously available.
The benefit of kintsugi wellness is that it allows you to very quickly see that being damaged alone is not a sign of failure or defeat. It is, rather, a sign of change, progress, and improvement. We can all bear scars, and instead of trying to hide them from the world, kintsugi wellness teaches you to embrace those moments.
They are the moments that make us the people we are today, so it is essential that you do not see damage as a failure, but simply another step in the journey that we call life.
]]>Really, it’s not so tough. The first thing that you need to do, though, is pick up a Kintsugi Kit. You could buy everything yourself, but what is the point? You may as well pick up everything in one neat little package. This gives you all the tools that you are going to need if you want to start carrying out the aspect and art of Kintsugi application. The Kintsugi aim is simple: you take a piece of damaged equipment, like a piece of pottery, and you use gold to fill in the cracks and add an extra layer of attention and artistry to the finished project.
Really, the entire practice is very simple, and most of the time it can be broken down into three smaller steps and sections. If you wish to carry out a full Kintsugi repair, then you need to get the following three points down.
What do I need?
As mentioned above, you should buy a Kintsugi Repair Kit instead of trying to find it all on your own. You can often find alternatives, but they might be as good or as ready for Kintsugi. So, to start off, you will need the following:
Getting Started
So, to begin with, the first thing that you want to do is get your broken pot, vase, bowl – whatever it is that has been broken. You can use Kintsugi on things like ceramic, but it should work with a wide selection of different substances. Your Kintsugi Kit should break down what it does and does not work on.
So, take your pot and then make sure that you have all the pieces. As mentioned before, missing parts of sections that might no longer fit perfectly due to chipping and/or fracturing can be filled in with the golden substance, so do not worry about that side of things.
Want to break something just for this?
Then take the item that you wish to break and wrap it up in a tea towel.
Then, put it in a bag. Drop it from a safe height, and watch it smash on the ground. The towel should contain all the pieces, and the bag will make sure that your item does not go anywhere else when you drop it.
Fitting It Together
The next thing that you now want to do is that you want to get fitting the pieces together again as one. This is quite easy; it’s like doing an old-school jigsaw. Start laying the pieces down next to one another, and then try to put in place a simple plan that can help you to keep it all numbered so that you can put it back together.
Try and lay out an old dustsheet, for example, and write small circular sections with numbers on it. Number each part and try to lay them out as best you can.
This should allow for a more chronological fitting when the time comes. Once you do this, then you want to make sure that you follow along with this simple plan and you should have it all sitting out in shape, in place, and in position.
Now that you have a plan of what to do and where parts will go, what next?
Piecing It Together
The next step is the hardest part, and where most of us have our main troubles. The aim here is simple, though; you want to get all the items out of your Kintsugi Kit. Now, start mixing together the Japanese gold repair powder that you were given as part of the package.
This will be mixed together with the Epoxy glue. Keep doing this using your mixing stick. We recommend that you do this until you can see it has clearly mixed right. Now, you want to start lightly applying this to the edge of your pieces using the paintbrush. Get as much on there as you can!
Now, once you have two conjoining pieces sitting next to each other, get the epoxy on the side and then push them together. Be gentle, mind. We recommend that you take this slow, and that you do it all piece-by-piece. You will be shocked at how fast this all starts to dry out, hence why you want to have everything prepared and in place for easy assembly and connection.
That is why you should not put out any of the items that you get with the Kintsugi Kit until you are 100% sure you are ready to start fitting it all together. Be as quick as you can, but also be careful when you are pushing pieces together.
As you keep going, you will start to see each part of the project come together and leave a nice, secure finish. You can choose the kind of finish that you want; some go for a smoother and simpler finish, while others will go for a bulky finish. It really does come down to artistic preference; you just have to be decisive on how neat you want to be, really!
And now you are done!
Once you piece it all together (moving as fast as you can), you should be left with a fully corrected piece of equipment. Whatever it is that you chose to fit back together, the simple method above should make it very, very easy for you to put it all in the one place without a single bump in the road.

]]>
What else, though, could this be used for? What other purposes does this unique and interesting form of repair offer us?
The Crack Method
Arguably the most commonly known form of Kintsugi is known as the “Crack Method”. This became a popular form of Kintsugi many years ago, and for a long time it managed to stand out as a form of artistic influence.
The use of the gold dust and resin mixed together will help to make sure that broken pieces can be pitched back together. The main aim of this form of Kintsugi is to avoid needless overlap, and to help ensure that any missing pieces can be accounted for, with the missing gaps and spaces filled in using the lacquer.
The Piece Method
The next most common form of Kintsugi that you have likely heard of is known as the “Piece Method”. To many, this has become the most common choice of Kintsugi when they are dealing with something that might need a very particular kind of finish.
The Piece Method is commonly suggested because a ceramic fragment may no longer be available for you. That is why entire sections may be filled in using entirely the compound material. This helps to fill in the gaps, meaning that an item can retain its original shape and structure without a missing piece.
The Joint Call
The other most common form of the Kintsugi method that is used a lot is known as the “Joint Call”. Most of the time, this would be used when there is a similarly shaped but non-matching piece of the item is found. This is then fitted in despite not being the correct shape and structure for what is missing.
The reason why many do this is that, by enveloping it using the gold, you create a kind of patchwork style. That immediately becomes accessible and is one of the many reasons why a lot of people love the Joint Call.
One thing to note about the power of Kintsugi, then, was its ability to spread the joy of being able to keep what we wanted. That is why many forms of Kintsugi-like features have come to life, with similar forms of repair used across Europe after it was discovered being used in Japan. Indeed, a form of staple repair was used – as mentioned in the History of Kintsugi section – that would gradually improve and adjust thanks to the work of Kintsugi enthusiasts.
Without doubt, though, the world of Kintsugi was made richer by the fact that it can be used in so many ways. Whether it’s to patch up a heavily damaged item or to simply help piece it all back together, Kintsugi is hugely popular.
Why, though, might you wish to try it out? What are the benefits of learning how it is done?]]>Nothing is permanently broken
The first benefit of Kintsugi is a life lesson: that in life, we never lose the items that have been broken by us. If you are someone who has a passion for keeping things fracture-free in life, you might find life quite a stressful experience!
Things break, whether that’s a relationship, a friendship, or even just a ceramic object. However, the power of Kintsugiis that it quickly teaches us that, in life, nothing is broken. There is no reason for you to see something being broken as being permanent: if you break something, it can be fixed, it can be repaired.
Learn to act, not to fret
Another useful benefit of learning about Kintsugi is that it soon teaches us about the changing of the way that we think. For example, right now you probably view that broken object as gone, as something that should have been stronger. Well, Kintsugi teaches us to stop looking at it that way; instead of seeing something as broken and thus fretting over it, take action – fix it!
Kintsugi leaves us with a valuable life lesson. You can fix what is broken, if only you act.
Become stronger mentally
When people hear of Kintsugi, they think of the benefit of not having to worry about losing something they love. And that is a major benefit, for sure. The most effective benefit, though, is that with the help of Kintsugi you can quickly learn that you have emerged from something, a serious setback, a negative, and you have found a solution.
Do not just see Kintsugi as a practical solution. When your own ceramic mind falls to the floor and smashes, Kintsugiteaches us that everything – even our minds – can be put back together and survive.
You can survive a fall
A unique and interesting take that you can get from Kintsugi, though, is realising that it shows you that you can survive a fall in life. That ceramic bowl that fell to the floor – you never thought you would use it again. Now? Now it looks more amazing than ever!
You can therefore use Kintsugi as a form of assurance that, in life, you can do something truly remarkable. You don’t have to take a setback or a fall – physical or mental – as the moment that you shatter. Kintsugi shows us that anything can be repaired; it can even be improved.
Never lose something special
The most material benefit of Kintsugi, though, is that you no longer need to watch something that you care about deeply and emotionally smash across the floor. When something has a genuine connection with you and the life that you lead, it’s only natural that you would want to hold onto it in a way that would keep it strong, safe, and secure.
It’s one of the main reasons why we recommend that you look at Kintsugi, really. Out of all the forms of repair out there, it’s the one that does the least work to hide its imperfections. And, as we have spoken about until now, that really is not such a bad thing!
Don’t hide your cracks
Another nice benefit of living a life by the philosophy and thinking that makes Kintsugi so powerful, though, is that you will stop doing so much to hide your own cracks and bumps in life. We all have our own failings in life, and for that reason we all look to find our own ways to plaster those cracks so that the rest of the world cannot see our weakness.
Kintsugi, though, teaches you to show that your cracks are just part of life. We all get cracked; we are all a vase that has fallen to the at least once. As life shows us, though, we often find the means and the nous to get back up and do it all again.
That is what Kintsugi shows us as much as anything: embrace imperfection. Stop trying to put yourself forward to society as someone who is the perfect example of what they ‘should’ be. Kintsugi is all about embracing who you are, the good and the bad.
You cannot make the bad vanish
The other lesson and benefit that you often get from Kintsugi is that it always reminds us that the bad exists. You may have managed to patch up, even improve, the item that was damaged. The cracks, though, still exist; they are still present. Nothing now can ever take them away. Nothing, really, can piece that item back together into the same shape and strength that it was once so proud to show off. Nothing can. Kintsugi, though, shows us that sometimes reversion is not as good as revolution.
It lets us see that instead of trying to revert to the past, we can all benefit from being able to tap into our notion for change. You might not have the ‘perfect’ design that you once did; what you have in your hands, though, is something so much more powerful. Instead, you now hold in your hands something of immense and vitally important capacity: the ability to wear the good and the bad like a badge of honour. If it’s good enough for your bowl or vase, it’s good enough for you.
How, though, does one go about managing a Kintsugi rebuilding experience?

Often, we will just panic and buy the very first gift that comes to mind. We’ll look for something that is more materially expensive than something that is genuinely useful from a sentimental point of view. That can be problematic, obviously, and leads to buying products that lack any kind of emotional pull. As anyone who has received a birthday gift for a major birthday will know, it’s the thought that counts.
In thirty years time, you want her to look back on her 21st birthday gift and think of you. It does not necessarily have to be something expensive. Instead, it has to be something that means a great deal to the recipient. That’s why we think it’s vital that you take a look at these 10 unique 21st birthday gifts for her.

If the aim is to find a gift that is going to mark her arrival in the world, why not go for a 21st birthday sweatshirt? It’s a cool idea as it’s a unique sweatshirt that is tailored to their exact year. You can even pick to have it made in a colour that is going to it in with their personality and their lifestyle. If that person means the world to you, then you could show them the year that your entire world changed with a birthday sweatshirt.
It’s a smart and simple gift that is sure to invoke plenty of emotion and give the recipient the kind of gift that reminds them of you every time they open it.
Birthday care set
While it might feel somewhat cliché, this personalised birthday gift set can be transformed into something genuinely quite meaningful. The recipient should enjoy picking out a fine collection of soap bars and other fragrance items. It will give them items that they can use today, whilst giving them branded artwork that is going to feel entirely appropriate to who they are.
Your challenge is then making sure that the idea and the text that you include on the box is going to feel right. However, with a product like this, you make sure that you are giving them something that they will be able to use and something that they will be happy to remember.
Kintsugi Art Kit
A really enjoyable gift to hand over when you want to make the right impression, though, is a Kintsugi Art Kit . Effective and enjoyable, these art kits will be just what you need when you want to give someone a kit that they can genuinely enjoy looking at.
In case you are new to the idea of Kintsugi art, it’s a form of Japanese art that is used to repair broken ceramic. Instead of trying to patch it up and hide the imperfection, Kintsugi art is used to help really paint an image of enjoyable imperfection. Part of it is politeness, while the other part is pure ego. Not wanting to be seen as demanding, or weak. Instead, they’ll just go without whatever it is that they wanted; rather foolish, wouldn’t you say?

For example, how often in life have you seen this man throw out a broken piece of ceramic? With a DIY kintsugi art kit, they can learn all about the art of repair by using gold.
Kintsugi art is a Japanese form of art that is about accepting imperfections and using them to our advantage. Instead of trying to hide cracks or damage, Kintsugi art looks to help combine all the broken pieces together using a golden based lacquer. This helps to keep it all in place, with the broken sections held together with clearly visible golden ( or any of the other 5 colours we offer) lacquer. It looks great, and it shows us that sometimes we don’t need to get rid of stuff if we wish to appreciate its beauty and its heart. This not only products a positive looking finish, but it helps to make sure that the ceramic dish is not lost needlessly.
Most importantly, though, kintsugi art is all about one thing: showing that we do not have to hide our imperfections. While western standards of repair often try to make something look ‘as good as new’, kintsugi art is different. It takes something that has been physically broken, and it turns it into something far more unique and enjoyable. That’s a big reason why so many mothers will get a nice less from kintsugi art.

DIY Kintsugi Kit gift
To make it to 50 years with someone means that you have often put in a lot of work. Along the way there will be plenty of fights, disagreements, and uncertainty. When you keep pushing, though, you will usually find a solution. It’s about accepting the imperfections and challenges of the marriage, and persevering to find a happier future for you both. Well, what better way to signify that than with a Kintsugi Art Kit
The art of Kintsugi, if you are not aware, is the use of lacquer to help add some depth and strength to a broken bowl. Ceramic, for example, smashes with relative ease. This helps you to repair what is left of the bowl, with the large golden streaks that hold the bowl in place so clearly visible. That is important, as it shows that we are not prepared to let our imperfections and weaknesses hold us back.
In fact, it’s one of the best solutions that you could pick from if you want a symbolic gift. You’ve both been smashed up and put back together again as those fifty years have come and gone. Why not let the world see your gold lacquer shining on through?

So, which of the various gold gifts for 50th wedding anniversary celebrations will you pick up to mark such a significant passing of the time?
As you can see from the array of Kintsugi guides and how to’s.
There’s something about Kintsugi that is very grounding in its metaphorical sesnse, therapeutic in the fixing sense and actually visually great to look at once you have gone ahead and fixed something.
Overall, a very satisfying endeavor.
And if you know someone who is ‘into’ Kintsugi.
You will know that it means a great deal to them spiritually and that’s why something Kintsugi inspired for an upcoming birthday or an anniversary of some kind.
A kintsugi gift can be something that has both practical and sentimental value.
That’s why we wanted to go ahead and create a list of 5 awesome Kintsugi gifts to someone special in your life.
1. Kintsugi Kit
What better way to introduce them into the world of Kintsugi than with their very own Kintsugi kit.
This kit basically provides all the Kintsugi supplies that they will need to start mending their very own broken pieces of pottery and whatever other range of objects that they have in mind.
It comes with:
So you will essentially have everything that is required to get stuck into Kintsugi.
All that’s needed to really, really complete the set is a broken plate or a mug?
Well, this could be exactly what you could provide.
As a thoughtful funny extra.
An already broken best friend mug for them to fix.
2. Kintsugi Jewelry
If you are looking for something a little more serious - however, still offers that deep sensual meaning.
Then looking into a range of Kintsugi jewelry could be a great option for you to ponder.
We actually posted our very own thoughts on our range of 10 favourite Kintsugi jewelry pieces.
You can get a whole range of Kintsugi inspired decorative pieces - everything from necklaces, broaches, pendants, earrings and much, much more.
What you will find is the Kintsugi scarring design and artwork that has infused them all.
In particular, what we like is the metaphorical meaning behind Kintsugi and some of the heart based pieces, not only makes for a beautiful piece but brings a lot of meaning and sentiment to it as well.
3. Kintsugi Pottery
This is essentially what Kintsugi was intended for.
However, if you already have a beautiful looking piece of pottery.
Just adding the Kintsugi factor to it is just going to make for a stunning piece.
Check out this best selling gorgeous Kintsugi blue bowl for instance.
It’s a really stellar piece and people will see that they are a wonderful piece to actually display - never mind eating out of (if you do plan on giving such a gift, make sure that it is ‘safe to eat’).
Of course, when it comes to pottery.
It’s not just bowls.
There are mugs, plates and much, much more to consider too.
A particularly popular option to go for is a Kintsugi vase.
In all, they make for some fascinating pieces and of course wonderful Kintsugi gifts.
4. Kintsugi Art
Kintsugi has become more than just a means to mend.It is a Japanese Art form in itself.
Naturally then, the extension for actual art work to be based around Kintsugi is not a stretch.
Strictly speaking the ‘art’ above is a poster, however, the beautiful minimalistic impact of Kintsugi is obvious to see and makes for a stunningly simply yet bold piece of work to have featured in a workspace.
Why I like the idea of it being in a work area.
Is that it serves as a metaphorical reminder to serve up a bad draft.
This can represent the ‘broken plate’.
Then you can go into your piece of work later and amend and fix it where necessary ‘essentially’ your second, third and fourth etc. revision will be the golden glue.
That overall - makes for a better version of your work.
5. Kintsugi Furniture
Now you can even get Kintsugi furniture.
Even this one surprised us.
And as a Kintsugi gift will probably surprise the person you are gifting it to.
So if it happens to be a drawer work area like this one - then it is a good idea to actually get permission from the potential giftee before going ahead and purchasing it.
That said, there is some glorious furniture out there.
Everything from Kintsugi coffee tables and chairs.
A white background or a black one can look particularly striking and impressive. Making for a frankly gorgeous piece given the right home interiors.
As said though, given the taste (and the likely expense) it is certainly worth ‘spoiling the surprise’ with this one as it can be a costly.
And by all means, this is not a comprehensive list.
You can basically have Kintsugi ‘anything’ as long as it is repairable.
And can, of course, be fixed by golden glue.
Have a good think about it though.
What would make an awesome Kintsugi gift for someone that is special to you.
Of course, we think the best way to actually get someone interested in the whole concept of Kintsugi in the first place is to actually have them get the kit.
Why?
This introduces them to the concept of Kintsugi. The philosophy. The how, the why and what.
If they go ahead and fix something with the Kintsugi kit with the supplies given, they themselves can show off what they’ve fixed.
And have some sentiment and pride in it too.
Of course, as always, if you have any questions with regards to any of the Kintsugi gifts that you see here (or have some ideas of your own) - then we would absolutely love to hear about them.

Another fine choice that we recommend is this best friends photo. For most of our, our sibling truly is our best friend; the one that we can rely upon for everything. Regarding the Kintsugi vase.
We have had a surprising amount of emails come in asking about how to repair a cracked vase made of glass -- and whether it can be done with Kintsugi?
The answer: yes, absolutely.
Does it take a bit more skill and care?
For sure.
But, nothing more than expected. The only difference between a glass vase as opposed to a ceramic pottery vase that we were dealing with is that -- firstly the edges are obviously sharper, so you going to have to be careful.
Also, the edges are narrower, so you going to have to pay more attention as you apply the gold lacquer.
Essentially, everything else remains the same.
You need two things:
Which you can, of course, pick up here.
Which you are going to have to provide yourself.
Given that you found this article though, you probably have one as you need to go about fixing it.
This way though, your vase is going to look 10x better than before.
And as many turned Kintsugi enthusiasts will attest to -- it makes for a great talking point if you have friends over -- where you can explain that you actually hand made it.
We’ve done a nice write-up about exactly what Kintsugi means and why it is so much more than simply fixing up broken pottery -- where there are a metaphor and philosophy behind it.
Wabi Sabi.
The art of appreciation in imperfection.
However, for now.
Let’s go through the steps needed to repair the cracked glass vase with gold glue.
In all seriousness though, Kintsugi is a really great way of making what could be a pretty boring job into a really fun one that has a fantastic underlying message and philosophy behind it.
Go ahead.
Pick up a Kintsugi kit here.
Fix your glass vase.
And also pick up a renewed and improved philosophy on life.

It’s something that no one wants to face…
I dropped and broke my favourite mug.
There I was.
Relaxing one Saturday afternoon. Feet up. Sipping a chuck back cappuccino with my favourite mug: The Reindeer.
A beautifully designed and all-round unique mug by Sami Rinne Design.
And, well you can guess the next part.
It fell to the floor and smashed all over my stone floor. However, here’s the thing. I wasn’t overly upset. I was actually secretly excited.
“Why!?” I hear you cry.
See, here’s the thing:
I knew that this mug’s life wasn’t over. Far from it. It’s only going to get better. And that’s where I want to introduce you to Kintsugi (also know as Kintsukori) comes in.
Now before I go any further let’s first establish what Kintsugi (Kintsukori is):
“Kintsukuroi (“golden mend”) is the Japanese art of mending broken pottery using lacquer resin laced with gold or silver. As well as a nifty form of repair, kintsukuroi has a deeper philosophical significance.” - Becoming Who You Are
So, sure.
It would be easy for me to just buy another new mug.
But, why would I? When I know a little wear and tear (i.e full on breakages) adds to the history and character of my mug. (Plus, I love practicing Kintsugi).
Basically, Kintsugi combines both philosophy (appreciating imperfection) as well as practicality (mending broken pottery). Kintsugi allows you to mock up a resin (typically in Gold, but you can get them in other colours too) to paste the broken parts back together.
For this.
All you will need is a Kintsugi kit.
This kit basically comes with everything you need for what I’m about to show you next (with step by step instructions - it does come with its own user instruction manual too, that I definitely recommend you give a read).
Step One
Order and get the kit in front of you.
Open it up and have everything you need. You’re going to need a clear open area.
And you’re going to need your favourite mug in front of you (or any other piece of pottery you have broken - that you would like mending).
Plus, make sure to have some protective gloves on too.
Step Two
We’re not reaching for the kit quite yet.
Firstly, start to piece back together with your broken ceramics.
If you have got just two pieces - this is obviously a much easier task than those who have ten. It also helps if they are quite reasonably sized chunks.
It gets a bit harder the smaller the pieces are.
Step Three
Get hold of some epoxy and pour it out onto a clean area, then with the mixing stick provided you want to be mixing some of the powder together.
This will either be gold or other colour, depending on the option you opted for.
Mix this well to have a good even complexion throughout the epoxy.
Step Four
Now, time for application.
Pick up the mixing stick with a bit of the mixture on and start to apply it to the broken edges of your first chosen piece.
Note: you will have seen a brush as well.
Use the brush if you want to create a smoother finish rather than a rustic one. Then apply the two pieces together.
Step Five
You want to start to wait for the epoxy to get somewhat sticky. This doesn’t take long, so you are going to have to move with haste.
Then wait for a few minutes but before the two broken pieces are fixed together solidly.
The more you apply, generally the longer you’re going to have to wait to some extent.
Step Six
It might not be perfectly smooth right across.
If that's the case, get a hold of your brush and start to touch up areas where you see fit. Usually where you have run out somewhat halfway through.
Step Seven
Now it is a simple case of rinse and repeat.
Once, you have fixed one piece.
Reach for the next.
And the next.
Then before you know it, you have entirely mended your mug again.
It now it looks better than before.
Now once, you’ve got to grips with it.
You might develop a similar urge to myself. And start to purposefully let things… drop to the floor. It might have happened to this bowl too.
On the upside, in case you get too addicted on Kintsugi, you might also want to try: How to Make your own Pottery at Home ,check it out this easy step by step from Porch.

]]>Kintsugi is a Japanese art form in which breaks and repairs are treated as part of the object's history. Broken ceramics are carefully mended by artisans with a lacquer resin mixed with powdered gold, silver or platinum. The repairs are visible — yet somehow beautiful. Kintsugi means "golden joinery" in Japanese.
How do I make Kintsugi?
What is the meaning of Kintsukuroi?
Kintsukuroi (“golden mend”) is the Japanese art of mending broken pottery using lacquer resin laced with gold or silver. As well as a nifty form of repair, kintsukuroi has a deeper philosophical significance.
How do Japanese mend broken?
Translated to “golden joinery,” Kintsugi (or Kintsukuroi, which means “golden repair”) is the centuries-old Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with a special lacquer dusted with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Beautiful seams of gold glint in the cracks of ceramic ware, giving a unique appearance to the piece.
Who invented Kintsugi?
The kintsugi technique may have been invented around the fifteenth century, when Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the eighth shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate after breaking his favourite cup of tea sent it to China to get it repaired.
